The University of South Africa (UNISA)[a] is the largest university system in South Africa by enrollment. It attracts a third of all higher education students in South Africa. Through various colleges and affiliates, UNISA has over 400,000 students, including international students from 130 countries worldwide, making it one of the world’s mega universities and the only such university in Africa.
As a comprehensive university, Unisa offers both vocational and academic programs, many of which have received international accreditation, as well as an extensive geographical footprint, giving their students recognition and employability in many countries the world over.

Who must apply?
- Everyone wanting to start a new qualification and/or a new specialization/stream must apply for admission.
- Applicants in their final year of study towards an undergraduate qualification must apply for admission.
When may I apply?
Applications for admission to honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas for the 2024 academic year are open from 1 September to 13 October 2023.

You need to check that you qualify for admission and that you have the necessary documents ready to upload during the application process.

Pay the application fee once you’ve received a student number from Unisa
- R135 for online applications
- The application fee is only applicable to students who do NOT have a formal Unisa student number
- Pay the application fee once you have received a student number from Unisa
- Use the student number you receive from Unisa AND the application fee allocation number as your reference number

This fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through Unisa, do not qualify for admission to Unisa or cannot be offered a space due to limited spaces available. Unisa does not provide cashier services and the payment should be made via a bank.
The due date for the application fee is the closing date for the application period. Any application submitted without an application fee will not be processed. Please ensure that you keep a copy of your proof of payment.
