University of Witwatersrand Tuition and Fees Structure

All international students (those who are not South African citizens or who do not have permanent residence status in South Africa) are required by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to provide proof of available funds prior to receiving his/her study visa. 

Students from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries pay annual local tuition fees, international registration fees (IRF) and related costs. The SADC member countries are Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

International undergraduate students from outside of SADC pay double the local tuition fees.

Fees for Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Diplomats and their dependants stationed in South Africa, occasional international students, and international Wits employees and their dependants are listed below.

For fee clearance at the time of registration, complete the online Fee Estimator (accessible on the Student Self-Service Portal) for the annual tuition fees, other related costs and the on-campus accommodation fee (if applicable). Forward the proof of payment and copy of the Fees Estimate to FeesOffice.Finance@wits.ac.za.

Please note that fees are increased annually depending on inflation and the University’s operational needs.

Postgraduate international students must pay:

  • International Registration Fee (IRF) of R6 970.00.  This fee is non-refundable.
  • Tuition fees for individual courses
  • 75% of the total cost is payable before registration
  • Any applicable residence fees

Tuition and Fees

While the total cost of the degree varies from student to student, for most students, the total cost of the degree ranges between $20,000 and $25,000. Our Net Price Calculator can help you estimate costs. 

Tuition and fees are billed through the Bursar’s Office.​

Tuition

WITS tuition is $375 per credit.

Fees

  • Application Fee (for degree-seeking students, non-refundable): $150
  • Program Fee (ISAP students only): Ranging from $1600-$1900. Please visit our ISAP Page for more details.
    • includes a $500 tuition credit applied to the first fall or spring semester of enrollment at the WITS campus in Baltimore
  • Registration Fee: $100 per semester
  • ​Technology Fee: $50 per semester
  • Lab/Materials Fee (when applicable): $85 per course
    • all courses with prefix ART, CIS, CSD, and lab sciences​
  • Mekoros Book/Manual Fee (when applicable):  $35 – $65​

  • The total cost of the degree varies from student to student. For most students, the estimated total cost of tuition and fees over the course of the degree ranges between $19,000 and $23,000.This does not include ISAP tuition or other study abroad expenses.
